An experimental method for determining the shading coefficient for windows with internal shading devices without using a refrigeration machine is described. The proposed method requires two naturally ventilated and transparent boxes in order to make negligible the heat gain from windows caused by the inside-outside temperature difference and to let solar radiation be transmitted toward the rear side. One of the two boxes is for glazing with internal shading and the other for a standard clear glass pane without shading. The shading coefficient can be determined from the solar optical properties measured and the heat transfer coefficients estimated from the heat balance at the shading and the glass. The values of the shading coefficient obtained from the present tests were found to be quite similar to the ones listed in ASHRAE Fundamentals.
