The ASHRAE TC 4.7 simplified energy analysis procedure is a series of dry-bulb-temperature-based bin calculations intended to provide building energy use predictions with reduced effort and acceptable accuracy. An early validation study concluded that the method provided accurate results, as compared to hourly computer simulations, for a specific building and climate. The present validation study, studying effects of several building parameters and climates, is summarized, and recommended guidelines are given for the use of the TC 4.7 method. The study shows that TC 4.7 predictions of annual energy use agree with DOE 2.1B predictions within 10% for "average" values of all parameters evaluated. Non-"average" building characteristics, particularly for glass-to-wall area ratio, internal heat gains, surface weight ratio, and large night setbacks often lead to larger deviations between TC 4.7 and DOE 2.lB predictions.
