This paper discusses four techniques for estimating hot water use in existing commercial buildings: direct measurement, calculation from summer fuel bills, calculation from total water load, and estimation from data for similar buildings. With the last technique, monitored hot water usage for 67 buildings in seven building categories are presented and compared to ASHRAE published values.
