Using a detached single-family house as a base case, the DOE2.1A load and energy analysis program is used to investigate various energy-saving options. The program is validated by comparing its results with measured data. The analysis shows that the building parameters having the greatest impact on energy consumption are glazing area, infiltration level, and heat conduction through walls and roofs. It also shows the effect on cooling load and energy consumption of varying these parameters. The effect of the behavioral variable (thermostat setting) on cooling loads and energy consumption is also studied. Finally, it was found that upgrading the thermal performance of the base house, including more reasonable thermostat settings, reduced the total annual energy consumption by about 38%.
