Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems can be operated dynamically, which, under certain circumstances, may reduce energy consumption and improve comfort. A case study is presented in which concepts of system free cooling, thermal manipulation, and space temperature drifting are applied to an office building in Edmonton. Tests conducted between May and November 1984 indicated that system free cooling occurred when outdoor temperatures were between 39°F and 72°F. Despite increased space temperature variations associated with dynamic control, comfort conditions improved, along with a reduction in maximum interior temperatures.
