States that many outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease in the UK have been subject to engineering and microbiological investigations, from which practical guidelines for the control of Legionella in water systems have been formulated. Underlying these guidelines are two fundamental principles of control - 1) prevention of surface fouling through good design and maintenance and 2) control of water temperature such that conditions are hostile to either the growth or survival of microorganisms. Outlines the rationale behind these fundamental principles, together with more detailed advice and describes two recent outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease.
