Reports the results of an extensive review of published data on domestic hot water use and the development of a database concerning hot water consumption in various commercial and residential buildings. The database includes hot water use patterns (hourly, daily and seasonal variations) and demographic and climatic factors. States the information was then analysed to provide a basis for determining where the current data on hot water use were not adequate. Summarises the results of phase 1 of ASHRAE research project RP-600 and provides recommendations for further field measurements.
