A series of tests have been completed comparing the effect of condenser liquid subcooling on system performance for refrigerants CFC12, HFC134a, and HFC152a. The tests were carried out under controlled conditions in a well-instrumented water-water heat pump test facility, using an open-drive reciprocating compressor and counterflow heat exchangers. The test data were used to compare important performance characteristics of CFC12, HFC134a, and HFC152a, including evaporator capacity, cooling coefficient of performance (COP), refrigerant mass flow, and compressor shaft power. The tests covered an evaporating temperature range of 5.8 to 46.4 deg F (-9.0 to 8.0 deg C), with a constant condensing temperature of 124.7 deg F (51.5 deg C). The degree of subcooling was varied between 10.8 and 32.4 deg F (6.0 and 18.0 deg C). The refrigerant superheat was maintained at 13.3 deg F (7.4 deg C) throughout the tests. Includes a brief description of the test facility and the measurement techniques used.

KEYWORDS: subcooling, refrigerants, coefficient of performance, R12. R134a, R152a, testing, comparing, water water heat pumps, heat pumps, reciprocating compressors, counterflow heat exchangers, fluid flow
