Describes technology for predicting the steady-state and transient performance of air-to-air heat pump systems with long pipes and high head. Steady-state performance is predicted by combining a model of the steady-state refrigerant cycle with a model of pressure drop in the pipe. In predicting transient performance, control is predicted more accurately by introducing dead time in pipe, which is caused by refrigerant transportation. Simulation results are consistent with the experimental data for both steady-state and transient performance. This predictive method is comprehensive and has been applied to the design of long pipe and higher head heat pump systems.
