An idealised model of reversed-cycle hot gas defrosting is developed. The model is developed for systems that have receivers and that are reversed while the compressor is running. An idealised model is necessitated by the complexity of the reversed cycle. The variations with time of the condensation pressure (which is essentially the compressor discharge pressure) is shown to be due, primarily, to the mass and internal energy stored in the pressure side of the system. The model is intended to provide for simulation of the performance characteristics of defrosting cycles and to provide a means of quantitative analysis.
