A review of gas-phase contaminant-removal literature provided the basis for a number of recommendations for a full-scale test method for air-cleaning devices. Current data are inadequate to specify completely such a test method. The literature did provide enough information to outline a method and suggested additional research for developing the test. The methodology proposed utilises a simulated outdoor air challenge with accelerated loading for permanently adsorbed contaminants and a simulated indoor air challenge containing a volatile organic compound (VOC) mixture fed at concentrations greater than those found indoors. The proposed methodology is only a starting point. It must be refined and its applicability evaluated during phase II of the research programme.
