Ice generation from supercooled water is applicable to an ice generator in thermal storage systems. The generator can achieve higher performance than static ice, but one of the problems is freezing of supercooled water in a cooler, which limits the temperature of supercooled water to -1degC (30.2degF) or more. An experimental study was conducted to consider improvements, such as 1) the cooling method and 2) the surface condition of the cooler that influences the stability of the water supercooling. Experimental results indicated that a temperature of -4degC (24.8degF) was achievable for supercooled water. Describes the experimental procedure and results, focusing on the wall temperature of the cooler and the surface condition, such as roughness and oxide condition.
