This paper investigates the interactive relationship between water and energy use in residential buildings for selected U.S. locations. Specifically, the energy and water use for four measures have been analyzed--shade trees, turfgrass, evaporative cooling, and indoor water management. The selected U.S. locations included Phoenix, Ariz., Austin, Tex., San Francisco, Calif., Denver, Colo., and Boston, Mass. The objective of the analysis is to establish the relationship between water use and energy use and to assess their impact on utility costs. This information could be used when designing homes to aid in evaluating the cost effectiveness and the interactive impact of energy efficiency and/or water efficiency measures.
