September’s anniversary article is by Roy C.E. Ahlgren, Member ASHRAE, who is a past chair of ASHRAE TC 6.1, Hydronic and Steam Heating Equipment and Systems. When low pressure steam heating systems were introduced, they marked a significant advancement over messy and inefficient stoves and fireplaces. This brief primer on steam systems explains the basics of low pressure steam systems, including how these systems can be operated, installed and designed. It traces the development of some of the design ideas, installation practices and components that were devised to solve problems and make the systems operate better. This article received recognition when it first appeared in the January 1994 issue of ASHRAE Journal.
