Elimination of energy wastage is one of the main goals in the European Union. Healthy and energy efficient housing is affected by manyfactors which set challenges for continuous Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and energy consumption monitoring, control and research, especially in oldbuildings. More energy efficient and air tight construction is thought to negatively affect indoor air quality. This paper presents an overview ofcontinuous measurement challenges, products and monitoring systems available on the market and under study which monitor indoor air qualityand energy consumption. In the field of building automation technology, a large amount of research work has been done in the last 20 years. Forinstance, smart homes have been one of the researched topics. Our experience related to measurement technologies has been gained in our previousresearch and development projects. In 2010, our research group developed the first prototype of a building monitoring and control system.Nowadays, the system has been installed in 21 residential buildings and in 10 school buildings located in the city of Kuopio, Finland. Utilizingthe system, we have collected information on indoor air quality (e.g. temperature, relative humidity and carbon dioxide) and energy consumption(water, heat and electricity) in these buildings for several years.
