Although there are numerous publications on sorption thermodynamics, there are many views and approaches on the thermodynamic fundamentals. This paper draws on these different lines of thought to propose and develop a thermodynamic model that is applicable to sorption system structures. The ideal cycle (i.e., with no irreversibilities) is developed from the representation on a temperature-entropy diagram of a real cycle by making idealizing assumptions. This theory enables design engineers to predict, based on simple principles, the performance and parameters of real sorption systems, i.e., COP, temperatures, cooling tower sizes, and how they interface with heat sources and sinks. The theory proposed enables further work on multi-cycles and second law analysis to be undertaken and provide textbook material on sorption thermodynamics.
