This article looks at some of the next-generation possibilities with a review of 17 alternatives to vapor-compression technology. Two of the more promising are thermoelastic and membrane heat pump technologies, which are in the R&D stages. The authors say that while the technologies show promise, further development will be required to demonstrate their ability to compete with conventional vapor-compression products.
