Current literature indicates a lack of consensus on the impacts of indoor thermal and air quality exposures on human responses, occupant performance, and productivity. This paper clarifies the terms and extends a previously reported rational model that links human responses, exposures, building systems, sources, and economic factors to also include exogenous factors, occupant performance, and productivity. The extended rational model is based on (1) an evaluation synthesis to identify exogenous factors and (2) an extensive review of literature on occupant performance, productivity, and their links to the indoor environment. The objectives of this paper are (a) to describe the extended model and (b) to demonstrate its application with an example in which measurable and controllable parameters of evaluation criteria are identified for diagnosing the performance of elementary schools.
