In June 1974, Dr. Rowland of the University of California at Irvine coauthoreda paper in Nature. Using a computer model, he hypothesized that fluorocarbonsmay diffuse into the mid-stratosphere where they may liberate chlorine atoms,possibly resulting in a substantial depletion of the ozone concentration inthe stratosphere. The paper received wide publicity.

This paper then discusses the structure of the atmosphere, ozone, and ongoing research.
