This article discusses how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) might be applied to HVAC&R projects, explains the steps involved with completing a CFD project using commercial software packages, and illustrates the cost and labor requirements necessary to implement CFD analysis. The ideas in this article are targeted to consulting engineers, and attempt to convey that CFD, a tool that has been reserved mainly for researchers and manufacturers with research and development budgets, is ready for use as an HVAC&R consulting engineering tool.
