This paper presents the application of the "Energy Balance Load" (EBL), which is developed with first law of thermodynamics, or energy conservation, in conjunction with the concepts of analytical redundancy (Shao and Claridge, 2006), as a tool for quality control of the energy consumption data patterns. The methodology has proved to be an effective data quality screening method for verification of metering sensors when heating, cooling and electricity consumption are separately recorded in a building and it is defined as the difference between the heating requirements plus the electric gains in the building and the cooling coil loads. The methodology has been used on more than one hundred buildings to verify their consumptions and to diagnostic erratic patterns. The methodology is suitable for automated application and could also beused to rehabilitate energy use data.
