Venturi steam traps are a durable and long-lasting option for condensate removal from steam systems. They can discharge varying condensate loads safely across various steam pressures, comparable to mechanical steam traps. The Venturi steam trap consists of an orifice and a nozzle without moving parts. Properly sized venturi steam traps can discharge condensate in a pre-determined range, have lower failure rates, and have a longer effective useful life than traditional steam traps. Venturi steam traps have the potential for energy savings by reducing trap failure rates and, specifically, eliminating steam losses due to failed-open traps. This paper will present key findings from the laboratory and field evaluation studies of Venturi steam traps. First, the paper will focus on venturi steam traps’ ability to operate in varying pressure and condensate load conditions. Second, it will focus on sizing, selection criteria, and real-life installations to demonstrate effective operation. Third, it will detail customers' feedback to support a 20-year useful life and lower failure rates. This paper will also assess and conclude the benefits, best practices, limitations, and target application types of Venturi steam traps.
