Industry consumes large amounts of energy to generate the high levels of heat required to operate various processes and to drive equipment, such as dryers, boilers, furnaces, incinerators, and turbines. Many pieces of equipment exhaust to atmosphere, ultimately wasting from 15% to as much as 80% of their input energy. Industry must recognize the various options available for systematically reducing these energy wastes as well as reducing original energy needs. Reducing operating costs by minimizing energy costs can increase profits. Two cost-reduction methods presently in use, recycling a portion of the exhaust air and air-to-air heat recovery, will be described, as will the economic and process limitations associated with each method.
