This paper demonstrates an approach that can be used to reduce the construction cost of office buildings through the judicious application of ice-storage systems when combined with lowtemperature supply air and lowtemperature chilled water distribution. The total energy of the air-conditioning system is addressed, including air and water transport energy as well as the energy used to generate chilled water.

By applying the inherent low-temperature feature of ice storage to air-handling and distribution systems, advantages beyond the central plant are realized. These additional advantages include reduced space requirements for air-handling and distribution systems, and further reduced electrical loads.

Reduced need for electric power-generating capacity, as well as reduced construction cost, can result from this combination.
