Frost formation on a cold flat surface with forced convection is investigated experimentally during the initial growth period. This frost growth process consists of two stages. The first stage corresponds to the liquid phase when water droplets are subcooled. During the second stage, the ice crystals start growing in a fashion that can be approximated by an ice-column model. The transition times marking these two stages and the characteristic size of the ice particles are determined quantitatively from microscopic photographs for a range of operating conditions useful in the numerical modelling of frost formation.
