The oversizing of centrifugal pumps on HVAC applications is a common problem, but this problem only truly shows itself once a system is started up and is operated in the field. The factors involved with detecting, troubleshooting, and modifying oversized pumping systems are numerous and special to each installation. The ramifications associated with oversized pumping systems are also unique to each installation. A presentation of a few practical field experiences with oversized pumping systems, including examples of these systems' detected problems, the physical factors and their ramifications, the required modifications, and the final outcome produced by these modifications, will be outlined in this paper. The approaches and conclusions drawn from these practical field experiences are specific to these projects but are generally applicable to the problems encountered in most systems with oversized pumps.
