In the last decade, HVAC control systems design for laboratory facilities has been influenced by changes in energy costs, new sensor technology, and the introduction and acceptance of distributed digital control (DDC) technology. These changes have combined with the acceptance of VAV air-handling systems to create opportunities for conserving energy within laboratories (especially with fume hood control) while maintaining proper safety and comfort levels. This paper reviews several control strategies that have varying levels of complexity. Prose and cons associated with the different levels of sophistication are discussed. These include not only issues surrounding the technical application of equipment but also considerations relating to the scientists who operate laboratories and their behavior.
