The growing market for thermal energy storage cooling systems has prompted numerous innovations, This paper describes an encapsulated ice system that achieves a storage density of 1.6 ft3/ton-hour (288 x 103 kJ/m3). Also described is a close-approach evaporator that uses a liquid jet for refrigerant feed, The refrigeration system uses liquid overfeed and can operate at low condensing conditions for maximum efficiency. Predicted heat transfer rates during tank charging and discharge are calculated using heat transfer analysis. Parameters for the analysis were used to predict operation of an installation scheduled to be completed during the fall of 1987. The tank can be fully charged jn 16 hours and discharged over 6 hours, according to the analysis, These charge and discharge rates make this approach suitable for building cooling applications.
