Describes the PSTAR procedure, primary and secondary-term analysis and renormalisation. The method is used to interpret data taken during a short-term energy monitoring period. Describes the application of the method to residences. States that by conducting a three-day test in a particular way and by using a simulation model of the building to isolate various energy flows, the model can be calibrated to fit the data. The calibrated model can then be used to estimate long-term performance or to isolate other unknown energy flows that occur during subsequent tests. Notes that the performance of building equipment can be measured in situ and hitherto unmeasurable effects can be evaluated. Presents initial validations of the method and gives results for several houses.

KEYWORDS: Calculating, energy consumption, monitoring, housing, short term, testing, models, computers, performance, calibrating, equipment, site testing, measuring, validating.
