States that profiles of fume hood use dictate the diversity and operating cost of a variable air volume lab building. Besides diversity, profiles of fume hood use can also be used to evaluate other lab system characteristics such as safety features, levels of inactivity, and projection of system capacity. Presents a methodology of collecting relevant data, on an on-line basis, for the determination of a profile of fume hood use. Such data are further analysed to calculate diversity and other system characteristics. The data were collected using a fully-integrated, direct digital control based building automation system in a university research building in New York State. Includes a case study using an institutional research building.
