Power factor (PF) correction (active harmonic filters in this casestudy) were proposed to enhance and improve the energy performance for acollege facility in New York, by increasing the PF from 0.94 to 0.99. Asadditional power is needed, a capacity challenge exists with the utilityfeeders to the campus. The author discusses potential savings methods thatcould enhance the energy performance installation-wide, increase the electricalgrid reliability, alleviate a capacity issue on the utility feeders to theinstallation, and provide avoided power generation costs.
