This chapter covers cooling and heating load calculation proceduresfor residential buildings, including detailed heat-balance methods that serveas the basis for cooling load calculation. Simple cooling load procedures,suitable for hand calculations, are provided for typical cases. Straightforwardheating load calculation procedures are also included.

Procedures in this chapter are based on the same fundamentalsas the nonresidential methods in Chapter 18. However, many characteristicsdistinguish residential loads, and Chapter 18’s procedures should be appliedwith care to residential applications.
