This chapter describes physical properties of the more commonsecondary coolants based on ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sodium chloride,or calcium chloride and provides information on their use. Less widely usedsecondary coolants such as ethyl alcohol or potassium formate are not includedin this chapter, but their physical properties are summarized in Melinder (2007).Physical property data for nitrate and nitrite salt solutions used forstratified thermal energy storage are presented by Andrepont (2012). The chapteralso includes information on corrosion protection. Supplemental information oncorrosion inhibition can be found in Chapter 49 of the 2019 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications andChapter 13 of the 2018 ASHRAEHandbook—Refrigeration.
