ASHRAE has sponsored a research project to upgrade and expand its smoke management book. The new book entitled Principles of Smoke Management presents data and methods of analysis for use by smoke management system designers. This paper presents an overview of the new information in this book, but the book still has the wealth of information about smoke management that was in its 1992 predecessor. This new information includes heat release rate, atrium systems, natural atrium venting, plugholing, minimum depth of an atrium smoke layer, smoke stratification, smoke detection, tenability systems, and computer analysis. The new book includes a CD of software for analysis of smoke management systems.
