This paper presents the main principles of a new CEN (European Committee for Standardization)and ISO standard for the calculation of summertime indoor temperatures: EN-ISO 13792, Thermal Performance of Buildings —Internal Temperature of a Room in Summer Without Mechanical Cooling —Simplified Calculation Methods. The standard gives the procedure for validation of any computer program that is to be used for this purpose. The basic idea behind this approach is to make it possible for any existing or new method/tool to be used, provided that it satisfies the assumptions given in the standard and passes the validation tests. Normally, standards impose an algorithm or a method as part of the standard, whereas in the present standard, no calculation method is imposed.

The standard is therefore organized in two parts: the first part clearly defines the assumptions that must be taken into account (as a minimum requirement) in any calculation method, for example, the values for film coefficients, the way the transmitted solar radiation is distributed around the room, etc. It also defines the outputs to be produced for use by designers or analysts, e.g., the maximum, average, and minimum hourly operative temperatures ? op, calculated as the average values between air and mean radiant temperature. These assumptions are given at a normalized (minimum) level.

The second part and the most essential part of the standard defines validation tests that shall be performed by any calculation method or computer code that is intended to be used for the calculation of internal temperatures in compliance with this standard.
