Based on actual field monitoring of integrated space conditioning heat pump/desuperheater water-heating systems, this report investigates the water-heating potential of such systems. The ultimate goal of this study and associated field tests was to improve and verify heat pump/desuperheater performance and reliability and to establish product confidence and satisfaction of the consumer and the HVAC industry. Data analysis and field observation of equipment operation prior to the date of this report support the following:

  1. The utility customer will realize levelized monthly utility costs and a significant reduction in water-heating cost where desuperheaters are used.
  2. Reduced summer demand due to improved cooling efficiency accomplished by the desuperheater and displacement of a large part of the water-heating demand factor would be realized by the utility.
  3. The winter water-heating potential of heat pump/desuperheater systems is better than previously thought and can approach summer performance in certain climates with special application techniques.
  4. The load-profiling potential of this integrated system concept is more conducive to improved utility economics than that of high efficiency "demand type" water-heating systems.
  5. The utility's extended service warranty (assured service) records indicate desuperheaters have no adverse effects on heat pump service and reliability when properly applied and installed.
