The direct cost of electric lighting in conventional office buildings can range from 20% to 50% of the total, energy cost. "Direct cost," in this case, excludes that due to removing heat generated by the lights and "conventional" means a building whose lighting control system in perimeter (window) offices is affected by daylight only through actions of the occupants. Interior spaces not reached by daylight obviously depend exclusively on artificial light, whereas window offices receive both artificial and natural light. This paper examines the effects of glazing on thermal loads.
