The field performance of a small ice harvester system is reported. The system consists of a 26-ton ice maker, a 300-ton-hour above-ground steel storage tank, and a building (dental clinic) with a 70-ton peak cooling load at Fort Bliss, TX. The system was designed to meet the building cooling demand from 1200 noon through 1600, the period during which Fort Bliss normally establishes billing demand. Outside these hours, the building is cooled by an existing chiller. The system began operation in October 1990. The performance of the ice maker and the existing chiller during the last month of the 1990 cooling season has been measured for comparison. Prior to the field installation, the ice maker was tested in a laboratory environment. A description of design, construction, and performance of this system is presented.
