Explains how a new approach to trigeneration (simultaneous production of electricity, cooling, and heating) using ammonia, used in district heating and cooling (DHC), significantly reduces the environmental impact of supplying communities with their energy needs. The pressing environmental and economic problems of the next decade will lead to policies and marketplace actions that make the advantages of this approach to DHC more valuable. DHC will become the energy supply option of choice for all communities, as is already the case in northern Europe, and trigeneration using ammonia offers an excellent technical and economic approach if the system is correctly configured.

KEYWORDS: district heating, district cooling, electricity production, ammonia, refrigerants, replacing, planning, economics, coefficient of performance, energy conservation, fluorocarbons, energy consumption.
