This paper provides an overview of the current design procedures of surface water heat pump (SWHP) and direct cooling (DC) systems with an emphasis on the key role of water temperature data in the design process. The paper gives an overview of the current information on SWHP systems readily available to HVAC design engineers. An overview of the temperature data collection process is discussed. Specific temperature plots are given from different regions of the country to show how water temperature changes with depth and season in those regions.
