Adding coil-defrosting heat-load data and coincident cooling-coil performance data to the Refrigeration Load chapter of the ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook is the primary benefit to be derived from this study. Absent such data currently, the chapter merely states that coil-defrosting heat loads may represent 15% or more of all heat-gains otherwise, and that designers should seek the experience of existing facilities in order to determine a safety-factor amount to include in total refrigeration load.
