In different parts of the world there are newly constructed buildings with very high levels of energy performance. These buildings have low needs of energy and use renewable sources, resulting not only in low energy consumption but also achieve high levels of thermal comfort, daylighting, and good acoustics. Embodied energy in building materials is considered in life cycle energy use. Case studies of new buildings in India and Latvia are presented along with the study of a building in Pakistan from over 400 years ago which could be cited as one of the first high efficiency buildings in history. It features an array of passive systems, including natural ventilation with venturi effects for air distribution, daylighting and reflective lighting as well as superb acoustics.
