This presentation reviews fundamental refrigerant selection considerations for chillers using centrifugal type compressors, over a wide range of application types and operating temperatures. System simulations including thermodynamic and transport property effects provide the basis to compare and contrast alternatives, including the choice of both refrigerant and refrigerating cycle. Graphical comparisons using an operating condition map provide insights on why different refrigerants are more promising for different applications and types of equipment. The comparisons include a number of past, present, and potentially future refrigerants.
