Thermal storage systems have great promise to aid in decarbonization, enabling greater deployment of renewable generation assets on the grid by making buildings flexible in their electricity consumption. This session covers HVAC system controls that can help realize this potential, by accounting for the time-value of electricity consumption, as well as the building thermal comfort. This session covers controls that account for real time grid carbon emissions to maximize decarbonization, controls of thermal storage systems that work for both heating and cooling mode, and model-predictive controls of ice storage systems.
