Trends in the electric power grid are driving changes in the relationship between the grid and buildings, which consume nearly 75% of U.S. electric power. Increasing amounts of renewable wind and solar photovoltaic generation because of their variability present new challenges in balancing supply and demand on the grid. As the largest user of electricity, buildings will likely be called upon in the future to help manage the grid through control of demand in exchange for incentives. This seminar describes control methods beyond current demand response that will enable both commercial and residential buildings to interact effectively with the grid.
