In 1982 the National Science Foundation funded a University/Industry program at the University of Arizona. The primary objective involved basic research in contamination prevention and removal. A second objective was the development of more contact and interaction between University researchers and scientist/engineers in the industry.

As part of this program a number of new contamination control technologies were investigated and presented to industry for evaluation . This report will discuss some of the experiments and the results . The topics include:

  1. Improved filtration systems for removal of submicron particulates with reduced pressure drop.
  2. New garment technology to reduce particle escape and improve ventilation.
  3. Improved air shower systems for removal of dust from clean room garments.
  4. Evaluation of dust generation by clean room gloves.
  5. Particle emission by smokers for 50 minutes after smoking ceases. Application of new mask systems for collection of particles emitted by smokers.
