Seismic codes are a method used to compute the magnitude of static horizontal seismic force acting at the center of gravity of the pipe element. Some of the factors that determine the seismic force are, for instance, the size of pipe, the pipe location within the building, and the maximum drop from the supporting structure without braces. The seismic risk area in which the structure is located is addressed within the interpretive portion of the seismic codes that dictates what size pipe must be braced. This paper deals with the necessary code interpretations, as well as the actual methods of support and the suggested support intervals. Risers and floor-mounted pipes also are discussed.
