PREFACE
The engineering of a successful product requires an ability to analyze the product as a whole, as well as its individual components and assemblies, in order to verify design decisions and to ascertain that the product will perform as intended without premature failure. The analysis invariably involves developing a model, or idealization, of the actual problem and then applying the principles of engineering to the model in order to predict its behavior.
Engineers need an understanding of the fundamental concepts and an ability to apply these concepts to the solution of engineering problems. Consequently, the developments in this text tend to evolve from fundamental principles such as equilibrium and conservation of energy. The basic concepts and principles are amply discussed and numerous examples are given throughout the text to help the reader grasp the ideas. We begin with theoretical and conceptual developments, presenting relatively simple examples aimed at illuminating certain aspects of the theory. We then apply the theory to specific types of problems such as beam bending, plate bending, vibration and buckling of beams and plates, and finite element analysis. The book contains general topics such as bending of curved beams, thick-walled cylinders, torsion of bars with noncircular cross sections, and finite element analysis. More specialized topics are also discussed, including fracture mechanics and piezoelectric behavior of materials.
