PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
The main change that has been made for the second edition of The Engineering of Chemical Reactions is the addition of two new chapters: Chapter 12 on biological reaction engineering and Chapter 13 on environmental reaction engineering. The increased prominence of biological and environmental reactions in chemical engineering makes it important that these subjects receive adequate coverage in any course in chemical reaction engineering. I personally find it exciting to add consideration of biological processes and environmental issues to a text that introduces students to the field.
The other changes made for the second edition include the addition of a few new sections, figures, and tables, the numbering of equations and headings, the inclusion of references at the end of many chapters, and the correction of errors that appeared in early printings of the first edition.
It has been my intent to keep the text as short as possible while covering all fundamentals and providing enough information on important applications to allow instructors to cover the material as time and interests dictate. I suggest that this book, while designed for use in an introductory undergraduate course, may be suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate or even a graduate course with the addition of selected material that the instructor wishes to emphasize.
I retain the firm belief that a book on chemical reaction engineering must contain enough information about the chemistry of different types of processes to help students see the richness of applications and their relevance to the analytical tools of reaction engineering. Otherwise chemical reaction engineering will be in danger of becoming an exercise whose relevance and excitement is lost on chemical engineering students.
