PIP recommends that process industry users refer to the appropriate American Petroleum Institute (API) standards for design, fabrication, inspection, testing, shipment, and documentation of large AC squirrel-cage induction motors and synchronous motors. PIP will be publishing a Practice (ELEMT01) that directs users to applicable API motor standards.

The purpose of this Practice is to provide a specification for purchase (including design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and shipment) of squirrel-cage induction motors for general purpose application in the process industries.

This Practice covers minimum requirements for design, fabrication, inspection, testing, shipment, and documentation of squirrel-cage induction motors (above NEMA 440 frame sizes) for general purpose applications. This Practice is based upon API 541, Third Edition, and specifies minimum requirements for general purpose applications (e.g., spared machines or non-critical service).
